Dear UUCM Community:
The UUCM Book Group is up and running for another year of shared reading and discussion on topics related to social justice, the environment, and social issues, whether that be non-fiction, novels, or biography. We will be meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7 pm on Zoom, beginning Tuesday, November 10.
There is a core group of members who meet regularly but in addition, we invite anyone from the church community to join us on a month-by-month basis – even if you have not read any or all of the book!
For November, we will be reading The Warmth of Other Suns, The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, by Isabel Wilkerson – about the flow of Black people from the South from 1915-1970. The book is arranged around the experience of three people and is readily available from your library network or used online.
This a long book but if you are limited for time, here are some suggestions:
1) The bulk of the book ends on page 538 – you certainly don’t need to read the 80 pages after that which are Notes and Index.
2) I suggest you focus your reading on:
Part One – In the Land of the Forefathers – Leaving
Part Two – Beginnings pp 17 – 180
Part Three – Exodus pp 181 – 222
Part Four – The Kinder Mistress – pick and choose sections of interest, perhaps including:
Chicago
New York
Los Angeles
Complications pp 332- 350
Revolutions 1960’s pp 385-431
And end with Part Five – The Aftermath and epilogue – pp 435 to 538.
Please join us on November 10 for this exciting read!
Lourie August
